Taking out cash abroad with Magstripe
Magstripe is a type of security that was common in the UK before chip and PIN. It uses information in the black strip on the back of your card to make payments.
It’s still very common in some parts of the world, but Magstripe is not as safe as chip and PIN because fraudsters can easily ‘clone’ the stripe. So we don’t automatically let you use your card with Magstripe card machines or ATMs.
Here's how to switch on Magstripe temporarily:
- Tap the Home icon in the menu bar
- Tap the Account button underneath your card (if you can't find this button, swipe down on your list of payments)
- Scroll down and toggle the button next to Magstripe ATMs
